A striking collaboration between the architectural practice Kengo Kuma and Associates and the Danish company Dinesen has culminated in the 'Earth / Tree' installation, now on display at the Copenhagen Contemporary art center. This unique exhibit, spearheaded by Yuki Ikeguchi from Kengo Kuma and Associates, features a captivating suspended structure crafted from wooden slats. The installation's lighting, designed by local studio Anker & Co, beautifully evokes the Japanese concept of 'komorebi,' which describes the enchanting patterns of light and shadow cast by sunlight filtering through tree canopies. Ikeguchi explained that the aim was to create an architectural 'komorebi,' providing sensory moments beneath a gentle wooden veil and atop a brick foundation.
For the creation of 'Earth / Tree,' materials sourced from Dinesen and bricks from Danish producer Pedersen Tegl were utilized. The wooden ceiling element gracefully merges with an artful arrangement of bricks on the floor, symbolizing the earth beneath. The choice of these materials and the industrial hall setting were deliberate, serving two primary purposes: to express the most elemental form of architecture—a comforting space under a tree canopy with earth underfoot—and to celebrate the exquisite traditional Danish craftsmanship of timber and brick. Notably, the wood processing for this exhibit involved the Danish Troldkær School, as part of an initiative to empower students with special needs, further highlighting the project's community engagement.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, 'Earth / Tree' offers an interactive experience for visitors. A dedicated workshop area encourages creative expression, providing a sandpit for landscape creation and various building blocks, including Kengo Kuma's Tsumiki, Danish wooden blocks, and miniature bricks. This installation is a key part of Copenhagen Contemporary's CCreative program, specifically tailored for the venue. Ikeguchi noted the unique aspect of this particular collaboration, praising the director's vision, the raw industrial beauty of the space, and the exceptional partners involved.
