Oscar-Nominated Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas to Star in ‘The Outsider,’ With Wagner Moura (EXCLUSIVE)

Instructions

Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, an Oscar-nominated actress, is slated to play the central role in the upcoming Brazilian film, 'The Outsider'. She will be joined by Wagner Moura, who won Best Actor at Cannes and is also an Oscar nominee. This collaboration brings together talents from two of this year's most prominent non-English language Academy Award-recognized films. The movie, also known as 'A Estrangeira', is produced by São Paulo's Maria Farinha Filmes and is under the direction and authorship of Brazilian filmmaker Sandra Delgado.

Wagner Moura, known for his role in 'The Secret Agent', is not only an executive producer for 'The Outsider' but will also take on a crucial character within the narrative. The film, a detailed biographical account, draws from two decades of exhaustive research by director Delgado. It focuses on the life of photographer Claudia Andujar, with Lilleaas portraying the dedicated artist.

Claudia Andujar, a Swiss-born Brazilian artist and activist, experienced profound personal loss during the Holocaust. She found sanctuary in Brazil, where her photographic work became a means of connection and belonging, particularly with the Yanomami people. Her art transformed into a powerful act of defiance during the 1970s when Brazil's military regime constructed a highway through Yanomami territory. Maria Farinha Filmes highlighted how Andujar's contributions have been instrumental in advocating for Indigenous land demarcation and supporting vaccination initiatives in the Amazon region. Her photographic collections are permanently housed in esteemed institutions such as the New York Museum of Modern Art and the Tate in the U.K., with a dedicated gallery in Brazil's Inhotim.

Lilleaas expressed her enthusiasm for participating in the storytelling of Claudia and the Yanomami people, noting her excitement to collaborate with Delgado and Moura on such a meaningful project. Delgado shared her vision for the lead actress, emphasizing the need for someone who could embody both Andujar's European heritage and her profound connection to Brazil. She recounted Moura's encounter with Lilleaas, where the actress coincidentally spoke Portuguese, and her previous work in 'Sentimental Value' convinced Delgado of her sensitivity and suitability for the role. Lilleaas's immediate empathy for Andujar's story and the Yanomami's struggle was a significant factor in her casting.

Mariana Oliva, co-CEO of Maria Farinha Filmes, praised Lilleaas's captivating screen presence, which she believes perfectly aligns with the emotional depth of the story. She noted that Delgado's writing creates a character that feels limitless, and they eagerly anticipate Lilleaas's interpretation bringing that expansiveness to life. Moura himself conveyed his eagerness to see 'The Outsider' on screen, defining it as the kind of cinema he is most drawn to—one that combines a compelling story with a vital cause. He stressed the urgency and continued relevance of Claudia's journey, commending the rare care and intention woven into the film's creation.

Maria Farinha Filmes, a studio known for successful productions such as the Amazon-set thriller 'Aruanas' and the documentary 'The Beginning of Life', continues to expand its reach. They are currently in pre-production for 'The Girl Who Could Fly', a film inspired by the life of gymnast Daiane dos Santos, co-produced with Viola Davis' Ashé Ventures. Additionally, the studio is nearing completion of 'Elza', a documentary by Eryk Rocha, which portrays the legendary singer Elza Soares and captures the political and artistic evolution of Brazil's Black movement through archival film fragments featuring prominent Black artists. In a strategic expansion, Maria Farinha Films launched MFF & Co in Los Angeles in 2024, which subsequently acquired a minority stake in London's acclaimed Violet Films, a four-time Oscar-nominated company. MFF & Co is developing several projects, including 'Possible', inspired by William Ury's book, 'Pegasus' by Amit Cohen and Ron Leshem, 'Fail-Safe' directed by Joe Berlinger, and 'Esperanza' by Marcos Nisti and Estela Renner, to be directed by Fernando Meirelles. Earlier this year, MFF & Co also announced that American writers Alexander Maggio, Jenny Lynn, and Ted Sullivan would adapt Globo telenovelas for North American audiences.

The production aims to shed light on a crucial historical period through the lens of art and activism, celebrating the enduring impact of individuals dedicated to social and environmental justice.
